A Hidden Gem answers a different question than your chances do. Chances ask “can I get in?” A hidden gem asks “is this programme actually better than its cutoff rank suggests?” A programme can be both Unlikely for your rank and a hidden gem at the same time — it just means a lot of strong students are still missing it.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Hidden Gem | Strong, well-matched research strength at a cutoff rank that looks like a real opportunity. |
| Likely Hidden Gem | Similar signal, but slightly less certain. |
| Possible Hidden Gem | Some positive signs, worth a look, but not a strong claim. |
Programmes that don’t stand out either way aren’t shown on the hidden gems page at all.
How we decide this
We look at how strong the programme’s actual research opportunity is, how well the real teaching matches that strength, and how competitive that opportunity is compared to similar programmes elsewhere. See what each of those means. Each hidden gem also shows a short explanation, with the option to see the full technical detail behind it if you want to check it yourself.
